Breaking news
Unanticipated events developing during the publication cycle (natural disasters, breaking conflicts, strikes, crime, war).

Coordinate production and publication of original posts in any language. Content editors manage a team of authors, and are also responsible for recruiting and approving them. This category include Regional, Language and Subject editors.
Current affairs
Recent news and discussion of stories that have recently occurred or are ongoing at the time of publication (political decisions, polemic discussions, law, science, or technology reports of note, etc).
Decentralised publishing
Decentralised Publishing is a process whereby we publish posts in a non-English language before they are translated and appear on Global Voices in English. It started in 2010, as a resolution of the Global Voices Summit in Santiago.
Deputy editor
Assists Global Voices Managing Editor with running of Global Voices online.
Digest editor
Sends daily and weekly email newsletters with the latest and best Global Voices stories.

Responsible for the running of Global Voices Online.
Executive director
Fetch post data
A tool for importing content from source. You need to provide a link to a published post in order to have all fields populated with the source text for translation (title, categories, excerpt and main post). It is also the way to tell the system a post was written in another language and link author and translator. See how the system works here.
GV / GVO
Abbreviation of Global Voices / Global Voices Online.
Global Voices Online
An international community of bloggers who report on blogs and citizen media from around the world.
IRC
Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, is a protocol for chatting over the internet. GV use it for editorial meetings.
Language editor
Responsible for writing and editing stories on Global Voices that reference citizen media in their languages, regardless of geography.
Lingua Announcements
Non-editorial posts that help build relationships with Lingua readers and translators. Lingua Announcements do not need to be translated into English, and can be edited and published by Lingua editors.
Lingua Project
A project which amplifies Global Voices stories in languages other than English with the help of volunteer translators. It opens the line of communication with non-English speaking bloggers and readers of Global Voices by translating content into other languages.
Lingua editor
Responsible for managing teams of volunteer translators, coordinating production and publication of translated posts in a Lingua site, ensuring overall quality of translations.
Managing director
Multilingual editor
The Multi-lingual editor coordinates the Global Voices Lingua Project and works to develop the Multilingual newsroom.
Multilingual Newsroom
The multilingual newsroom is a concept presented in the Global Voices Summit 2012 for the future of the Decentralised Publishing. As of Aug 2012, it has not been presented to the community or implemented yet, so the Decentralised Publishing is still the workflow in place for production in any other language than English.
Original content
An original news piece; a post that is not a translation of any other Global Voices post. It can be produced in any language with the supervision of Content Editors, but will eventually have a translation in English.
Posts
Posts are what we call the full length GV articles. Typically, they are detailed explanations of one big idea or several related ideas written in around 1,000 words or less. They normally make use of links, quotes and images from a variety of citizen media about the subject covered, which are displayed in ‘block quote’ sections or ‘translation boxes’.
Regional editor
Responsible for writing and editing stories on Global Voices that reference citizen media in their regions.
Regular stories
Everything else and soft news in general; all stories for which there is no precipitating event triggering them and that can be published at any time (arts and entertainment, sports, lifestyle, anniversaries, food, entertainment, bloggers interviews)
Rising Voices
A GV project, which aims to extend the benefits and reach of citizen media by connecting online media activists around the world and supporting their best ideas.
Rising Voices director
Shortcodes
Sub-editors
A team of volunteers who help editors to make sure all stories appear in a clear and professional manner. They are trained to check English posts (originally written in English or in translation) against Global Voices Style Guide and do their best to perfect the language (grammar, style, and usage) without altering the structure or intent of the story.
Subject editor
Have special responsibility for one topic in citizen media across multiple regions and languages. Example: Video, Health, Sports.
Time sensitive news
News about anticipated events that have time to be published; these are always known in advance but do have time to be published (upcoming elections, referendum, annual festivals, competitions)
Translator
International volunteers that work for Lingua sites translating Global Voices stories in their languages
Updates
Updates are what we call the short GV articles that integrate hyperlinks within a brief explanatory text, in around 25-50 words. Updates appear in the right side of most pages with just some brief explanatory text, a permalink to the article referenced, and the update author listed.
WordPress
The content management system platform that GV websites use.
